Womens Day 2021

It was a regular day at the office filled with back-to-back conference calls, unrealistic client requests, colleagues complaining about slow wi-fi and whining about bosses who constantly nag.  In the discreet corner of the office, near the water-cooler, which more often than not becomes a hub of office gossip and harmless banter, somebody spoke. Such things happen when the environment is conducive enough. People let their guards down and unknowingly expose their innermost, crude and lewd biases. This someone basically cribbed that Women's day is celebrated every year with such enthusiasm as against to Men's day which is a relatively low-key affair. This someone also added numerous examples of sacrifices that men make in their daily lives but which go unrecognized. Added that modern women are supposedly empowered enough with the world rooting for them. Needless to say, this somebody was a he. And then everybody in the nodded in agreement and the banter continued. I thought o

Movie Review - The Girl on the Train (2021)

A slugfest of bad acting, editing and screenplay. In an attempt to create shock value, completely misses the point of the book. Unnecessarily shoves terrible subplots into the story and ends up leaving too many open ended questions. Overthrows everything that made the book an amazing read and a runaway success, and serves the audience with a confused alternative instead.  Save yourself the trouble, and read the book if you want to actually experience fantastic storytelling. Else, if short on time, watch the 2016 version instead where Emily Blunt makes a far better attempt to portray The Girl on the Train.

A Man Called Ove - Book Review

I generally don't do book reviews. I read for pleasure, gaining more knowledge, passing time, having a wider perspective. Basically for consumption. I might bring about some anecdotes learnt from books in casual conversations here and there. But nothing more. Books are a gateway for me to reflect. It has always been this way.   But there are some rare books that demand an exception. A kind of book that moves you on so many levels that it becomes important to bare you heart out. It demands being talked about. It compels you to share what you are feeling. Because what you are feeling is a combination of so many emotions that if you don't talk about it you will be overwhelmed. And you know that once you talk about it, you will feel so much lighter. Because you know that you will have spread a story that is, without an iota of doubt, a kind of story that is needed so much in today's times. It's importance in today's world cannot be overestimated. Such purity in emotions

The curious case of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai: Take 2

Image
Oh, how excited we were when we heard that we will get to see the Sarabhai family again. We fell in love with everything about the show’s first endeavor. The motley bunch of non-pretentious, quirky characters, the excellent and talented star cast, the rock solid screenplay, the friendly banter and especially the situations that everyone can identify with irrespective of one’s  social or financial background. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai was a breath of fresh air when it was first released in 2004. It did not matter that the show was released on a newly launched channel (Star one, Star’s daring attempt to target the audience of 21 st century with fresh content). The show was successful in creating an impact and no doubt that it gathered a cult following. It filled a huge void in Indian sitcom space. And became immortal along with arguably the best Hindi sitcoms including but not limited to Dekh Bhai Dekh, Hum Paanch, and Khichdi. So there is no doubt that when in mid-2016 the star cas

“I am going out for a run.” said Anees. Mandeep just growled. “In this heat?” he asked. Part to hide his laziness, part to discourage Anees so that he could have a partner to share the cigarette. Anees said yes, determinedly. He did not want to miss the run for anything. Leave alone a cigarette. “Ah! Whatever man. I will got to the common room and watch the India-Australia test series on TV instead of following live scores on the internet.” And with that Mandeep got up and left. Anees glanced at him. Mandeep’s boxers were way too below the socially accepted decency lines. He know that Mandeep thought it was charming of him to do a skin-show so he decided to not comment on it. Just as Mandeep was leaving, Pratham entered. He was all sweaty and breathing heavily from the recently completed run. He too could not help but notice Mandeep’s waistline and winked at Anees. Anees gestured, leave him alone, with a wave of hand. Pratham knew that it was hopeless advising Mandeep.

Delightful Friday

People say 'One must not live in past'. But what to do when the past is so captivating. It just lures you to have a quick look at it and you suddenly realise you have spent the entire day watching old photographs. And when its all over, you realise that your face hurts because of all that smiling. Here are some of the situations which were captured in pictures and have made way for a Delightful Friday: Friend's nuts hit by your motorcycle's handle. The signature day in college. The unforgettable trek to a fort and getting drenched in rain when you reach top. The friendship day spent in hostel rooms dancing. The trusted Ganesh Visarjan ceremony. A camping trip long time ago, when your friends looked so skinny. The farewell. The 350 km bike ride back home. The Navratri Jatra . The Annual Social Gathering in college. And the list goes on.... Now if we are not supposed to live in past, what are photographs for? I don't know. But I know this for

There is this lovely poem that I came across. I actually saw this as a signature to mails from my Project Guide. he chose the second para as his signature. I felt the lines very nice, so I googled it (assuming that my guide was not a poet type). Quite surprisingly, it was a poem by Rudyard Kipling. So sharing it. For those who have already read it, it is wroth read once more. For the first timers, Enjoy.... P.S. : And for the judgmental types who think that this is a very famous poem and how come Pratap didn't know about it before etc. I don't know many things. This world is very big and there can be cases that you don't know something. So just move on! If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or, being hated, don't give way

MUMBAI: LIKE OR DON’T LIKE IT, BUT YOU’LL LOVE IT.

Image
Coming to Mumbai was a decision which was taken with a lot of thought. Hope for a better education quality was the first point. And the rest followed. Pune was an option but…… frankly speaking patterns and prejudices do scare the hell out of me. The image of Pune which resembles to some UNDISPUTED CHAMPION in the field of education makes me cynical. Ask anyone where they want to go for study? And the answer you get is a cliché. And you definitely know who I am talking about. Of course the glorious town of Pune with its archaic tradition of producing or to say MANUFACTURING (Sorry! But preparing for CAT leaves an impression on you ) so called Graduates year after year compelles you to have a second thought about it. No offence to Pune’s Education system. It is among the best we have in India. But my experiences says ‘Never to follow the crowd, If your aim is to lead them.’ So Mumbai was finalized. Well my first day in Mumbai. I arrived at Dadar, and hugely underestimated the sta

Fear of Losing or Obsession to Win?

Confused? think wisely. OK let me help you out. What do you think, are they same or different? Well most of you will think that they are different. But a handful of the probable readers of my blog will think that they are the same. OK another question for you. Which of you think is more Harmful? and the scope of this harm can be the person himself or the people around him/her. Can anyone of these qualities ruin u? Well this question popped in my mind when i had my very first encounter with destiny. I am firm believer that a man creates his own Fate. But some incidents in your life makes you helpless. You virtually have no control on those things. It is today that i have realised that Destiny is very powerful. Never before I have found myself in such a situation where you are made to do something. It's a bit annoying when you have no control on the things around you. You have no freedon of choice. You are compelled to LOSE. I will here explain my title. Well there is a very fine rel

HOME SWEET HOME

hi. today no politics. just some ' gharguti ' stuff. As now i am enjoying the ' ghar ka khana ' and ' maa ke haath ki rotiya ' so will write about that. This time too, as always, when my ' maa ' saw me after 4 months the reaction was a cocktail of happiness and worries and many subordinate emotions. 'beta tu kitna dubla ho gaya hai ?' was the first line she told me. But this time i was prepared. from last 3 years since i joined engineering, every time i reach home my mom has the same reaction. Denying all the physical laws and proofs of weighing machines from 'The Railway Station' and 'The Bus Stand' and even 'THE JOINT CAFE ( CIDCO )' my mom wants me to eat and eat and eat and eat. Bas maa bahut ho gaya !!! is the only reply i can give. but who cares what my small stomach has to say? this time i heard a strange concept regarding the materials of which stomachs are made up of. Stomachs are made up of INFIN

When you stand for the right thing, there will be people who will be unhappy with you

i am back. After so many days of course, but was really busy with all the Campus recruitments. But 'All's well that ends well'. only the climax of my struggling interview was good. I am not going to discuss more about my interview because there are more serious things to talk about. One of my dearest friends is not happy with my blog. but dear friends tell me that should we really take things for granted? is that a thing to accept? Why should we accept? At this point of time i remember one scene of 'RDB' where Su tells DJ and Pandey to stop fighting in the university. She tells one sentence which strikes me like a sledgehammer. "Why did i pack my bags and come to a country where people are lookinig for an excuse to kill each other?" Is this really true. Just see the situation around us. are we really LOOKING FOR A REASON TO KILL EACH OTHER? Fighting for democracy, my foot. All of them do the same thing. DIVIDE AND RULE. Even the Britishers, also Congress a

Unity In Diversity: A Bullshit?????

A unusual title to begin my blog with but it seems that this is the only one topic about which i would like to tell a lot. Now when i hear this phrase 'UNITY IN DIVERSITY' a picture of a peaceful India comes to my mind. An India where i can see many people, each belonging to different cultures living together in harmony. At least that is what i used to write in my school days when i used to be given this topic for a composition. But times have changed. I left my school five years ago. I cannot think of a reason why my thoughts about this topic have changed drastically. Maybe it's time or it can also be that today i am more aware of India's political scenario.Well in my school days I was totally indifferent to Politics. But as i know that politics is a part and parcel of life, today i take interest in it. Now what has changed in 5 years that my long established belief in this phrase has started to blur? Is it Raj Thackrey or is it Jaipur blasts. But all these are recent
